After hearing rave reviews of the Agnanti in Queens, we ran over to their new location in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn to see what all the fuss is about. And we left quite impressed! For one thing, this Greek restaurant knows how to treat its customers. Our visit on Valentines Day showed a gracious host doing her best to seat us, even though we had no reservations and the place was packed. And while our waitress was a little slow, our hostess made up for it with two glasses of wine on the house. A heart filled with chocolates was also left on the table. I imagine it's that type of care that makes for return customers. But, what's not to return for.
The food is simply fabulous. Start with the Shrimps Kataifi ($11), four juicy crustaceans wrapped in finely shredded pastry, fried until crispy and served in a delicious mustard sauce. Trust me you'll want two orders. Then there's the Saganaki ($7.50), a traditional Greek cheese baked atop roasted tomatoes. The best I've tasted, although I must admit it's the only Saganaki I've tasted. Hand-rolled grape leaves, stuffed with rice and herbs, arrived stacked like a little log cabin. Entrees are equally as impressive. A t-bone steak ($19.50), grilled to perfection, arrived just as it had been ordered by my dining companion, well-done. And the Sword Fish Kebab ($15.50) was crisp around the edges, while juicy and flavorful in the center. Dessert this night was also on the house; a dollop of yogurt topped with sour cherries in a syrupy sauce surrounded by four miniture Greek pastries.
Our biggest problem at Agnanti was deciding what to order from the extensive menu. All of the dishes had the look and feel of home cooking. Somewhere in Greece grandma is smiling!
