Cititour Review:

Prospect Park now extends all the way to 3rd Avenue in some places.  And it is here on the corner of 9th Street that you will find Bar Tano.  The owners have done a great job adding old world charm to the space with an ornate tin ceiling, crushed leather banquettes and a long wooden bar.  The room makes you feel like you've just gone back into the 1930s.

A friendly hostess showed us to our table in full view of the elevated G train which kept our son intrigued. The food runs Italian with a full line of brushette ($3) with a choice of toppings ranging from olive tapenade with red onion to a goat cheese and fig spread.  You'll also find healthy-size salads.  We tried the Tano Salade ($8) brimming with arugula, radicchio, walnuts and gorgonzola in a delightful balsamic reduction.  Wonderful!   Pizza also prevails on the menu with tempting varieties like proscuitto and arugula ($12), wild mushroom with smoked mozzarella and fontina ($11), and a traditional margherita ($8) with tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil.

There are a few entrees to choose from including a steak tagliata, braised short ribs with polenta, and grilled chicken with a fennel salad along with a nice assortment of pasta.   We opted for the house burgers ($12) which resemble thick slices of meat loaf wedged between crusty slices of Italian bread with a large supply of mouth-watering homemade potato chips piled high on the side.  The chips alone are worth the trip.  They really should consider packaging them.

All in all, Bar Tano is primo!
