David Burke heads downtown to The James Hotel with David Burke Kitchen. The space, designed by Thomas Schlesser, is what you might call "rustic cool". Let's just say that while it's meant to resemble the feel of a country barn, you won't find any barnyard animals here, except maybe on the menu. What you will find is a classy bar called the "Treehouse" that blends smooth steel with weathered wood, and of course yummy cocktails, like the "Pomegranate Frost", a mix of cachaca, fresh pomegranate juice, rose water and champagne, or the "Good N Plenty," orange vodka, sweet vermouth, grapefruit juice and good n plenty's. It's pretty much what we've come to expect from restaurateur David Burke, who always offers a bit of adventure with every bite and likes to keep you guessing. This spot is no exception offering dishes like "Ants on a Log," a concoction of bone marrow, snails, parsley and garlic ($16), deconstructed Lobster Soup with coconut fennel crème and red watercress ($13), and a Pretzel Crab Cake ($16) with tomato orange, green peppercorn and white beer. Main courses also thrill with Soy Honey Lola Duck ($34) served with a foie gras corn cake and maitake mushrooms, Veal "Oscar" with king crab ($28) and a Dry Aged Prime Ribeye ($45) served with fingerling potatoes and horseradish. The restaurant also features a wine cave, and come spring an Urban Garden. And while it might be a bit on the pricey side, we all need to live a little sometimes. - Thomas Rafael
