Cititour Review:

Dinner at Diablo Royale All of the sudden, Mexican is hotter than well - a hot tamale. La Esquina got the ball rolling with its subterranean lair. Now Chef Keith Harry, who has worked at places like Butter and Chanterelle, is making his mark at Diablo Royale. The tacqueria is serving up gourmet Mexican grub in the Village. No pre-made tacos served on dishes that are hotter than the food in this joint. The place is very rustic. Lots of wooden beams, funky red antler chandeliers and murals of assorted Mexican tequilas, which kinda gives you the feel of being South of the Border. The margaritas are very good, but they could have used a bit more kick (hint: add more tequila!). But from the chips to the tacos, everything else we tried was right on the money. The guacamole ($6/$11) is served fresh and comes plain, spicy and "Hellfire" spicy. We went with the plain which was just fine. Other starters include grilled corn with cayenne pepper, cotija cheese and lime ($5), and grilled seafood in a spicy haberno sauce ($8). "Diablo" tacos, sold in pairs with a side of rice and beans, go for $15. The braised pork with chilies was just as good, if not better than traditional Mexican restaurants I've tried. But other dishes seem to break the mold. A fried oyster taco topped with a creamy cilantro sauce was not only inventive, but also quite tasty. Other dishes include seared tuna tacos, which I plan to try on my next visit, and spare ribs braised with chili and Mexican honey ($17). Dessert offers up chocolate tacos, which I'm told resemble an ice cream sundae. I tried the espresso flan which hit the spot just fine. Not too sweet with a little bit of a coffee crunch. The service is friendly and attentive. The restaurant has also started serving Sunday brunch. Overall, Diablo Royale is a royal treat and a welcome edition to the New York food scene!
