First it was Reuben, now Joe has arrived on the scene with the opening of Empanada Joe's on 111th Street and Broadway. The shop is offering a neat selection of freshly prepared empanadas with a delightfully flaky crust.There are six types on the menu, including the Argentine Beef, stuffed with organic beef, green bell peppers, onions and just the right amount of spice. It was by far the best we tasted. Rojo pulled pork was another winner with a slightly sweet marinade. It went very well with the smoky chipotle sauce offered on the side. The Mediterranean Caprese was the weakest of the bunch. Stuffed with diced tomato, basil and mozzarella it kind of deflated, but was still quite tasty. Next, we'll have to try the Dolce Sausage and Pepper or maybe one of their breakfast empanadas. The shop also offers salads and sides like the Spanish Potato Salad, and a Tuscan Pasta Salad with sundried tomatoes and calamata olives in a balsamic dressing.
Prices are fairly reasonable at $3.38 for an empanada, including dessert versions, like the Cha Cha Chocolate and Banana, and the Pina Colada made with tangy pineapple and a touch of coconut. And then there's The Big Apple filled with Granny Smith apples, caramelized sugar and cinnamon. Now that sounds yummy!
