Walking into Empanada Mama is like walking into a ray of sunshine with its bright lemon yellow chairs and Kermit green walls. Unlike its popular Hells Kitchen location, there are no tables here, just counter service. But what really shines are the empanadas. They are baked golden brown with a light and fluffy crust and stuffed with everything from Colombian sausage to a seafood stew made with shrimps, scallops and crab, dubbed "Viagra." We tried four of them and there were no clunkers. High on the list is the "Brazil" filled with a fabulous mix of ground beef, sauteed onions, potatoes and olives. You'll also find the "Cheese Steak" stuffed with mozzarella and marinated skirt steak, and the "Cuban" with roasted pork, ham and cheese with a touch of sofrito. Vegetarian options, like the "Greek Spinach Pie," are also available. Entrees include slow-roasted pernil, chuletas (fried pork chops) with rice and beans, and Carne Sudada; a braised hanger steak slow cooked with tomatoes, peppers and onions. Empanada Mama is also catering to the late night crowd. It's open till 5am daily. - Thomas Rafael
