Contemporary Chinese arrives in the East Village at Hunan Slurp. Chef Chao Wang, who was born in Hunan province, is trying to recreate the noodle shops of his childhood found in little alleyways with "slurping" sounds coming from them. The menu highlights noodle dishes like Pig Trotter, a stew with soy bean, celery and chili; Fish Fillet which involves plunging raw fish fillets into a creamy pork-bone soup with mushrooms; Braised Beef is accompanied by daikon and egg; and Pork Shank is served in a bone marrow, Tonkotsu-style broth. Other dishes include stir-fried spare rib in black bean sauce, fried frog leg with red pepper, and a Hunan "Donut" made with a scallion, rice and flour dough. The setting is a light-filled space with warm wooden finishes, including a long sharing table. See more
