Cititour Review:

John Brown Smokehouse is known the city over for their delicious burnt ends (pictured): smoky, meaty, juicy, tender, with a slight crust on the outside that yields to your bite to reveal the fatty goodness of perfectly smoked meat. Unfortunately, they run out frequently - and as with any good 'cue restaurant, that's just how the cookie crumbles.

Fortunately, there's plenty else on the menu that makes the trip to Long Island City worth it. The pork belly, for example, is an absolute delight; the same cut as bacon, but not cured before it's smoked, this is the best pork you'll ever have anywhere. Ask nicely and they might even give you the fattier (aka best) bits. Paired with the deliciously crunchy cole slaw - vinegar-based, tempered nicely by sugar - their pork belly on thick slices of Texas toast, topped with the slaw, is the perfect meal.

Don't leave without trying their cornbread, though. Closer to a corn pudding than the traditional corn bread, this decadent side should really be listed as a dessert. Sweet, sticky, and so good you'll scrape the paper boat clean, it's worth every penny. And if you still have room, be sure to peek at what desserts are available that day: they're made in-house by the cashier manager- an 18 year old who taught herself how to bake.
