Cititour Review:

George Bernard Shaw hadn't met the folks at Las Ramblas when he said, "Youth is wasted on the young." During my visit to Las Ramblas, on its one month anniversary, I met three young people running this Village Tapas who were marking the event with a glass of wine. They were chatty, maybe a little too so, but there was also a feeling of free spirits in the room, a place not chained down by tradition. Instead, they seem to be navigating as they go along. And so far, making the right moves. The restaurant itself is small with just a few tables and a banquette running along the front. Candles and exposed brick give the room warmth and you instantly feel comfortable. I spent my visit at the bar, where the bartender spoke in a very thick Spanish accent. He was very theatrical and maybe a bit over the top. I later found out it was inded an act. He was actually from New York, not Madrid. But that's part of the fun of the place. And while they may not take themselves too serious, the Spanish tapas are taken very seriously. I tried the Croquetas de Jamon ($6). What arrived kind of reminded me of little asteroids, each filled with a mixture of silky smooth potato, york and serrano ham that oozes out when you crack into crispy shells. I also instantly fell in love with the Bocadillos Crujientes ($5). These are mini sandwiches made with ham, tetilla cheese and pequillo peppers. They are truly fabulous and I could have sat there all night popping them. Other specialties of the house include; Albondigas ($5), roasted mini meatballs made with garlic and manchego cheese served in a lemon-oregano dressing. Then there's the Banderillas con Chorizo De Pato ($5), skewers of duck sausage, quail eggs and pearl onions. You'll also find fried calamari ($5) served alongside a pepper sauce, instead of the traditional tomato sauce. Aside from its Spanish wines, Las Ramblas also serves specialty sangrias in flavors like red pear, white peach and sparkling strawberry. I enjoyed my visit to Las Rablas. It's young and fun, and very inviting!
