When I'm looking for a nice slice I often find myself returning to Little Italy. Not the neighborhood, the pizza shop on West 45th Street in Midtown, not too far from Rockefeller Center. The place is usually packed with tourists, but natives seem to like it just as much. After all, who can resist pies topped with things like chipotle chicken, spicy calamari and pesto on fresh mozzarella.
A spinach slice was rich and creamy and reminded me of an artichoke slice I tried in the East Village. The crust offers just the right amount of chew while staying crunchy around the edges. If you crave meat, a bacon, sausage and pepperoni slice will satisfy the urge. Regular Neapolitan and Sicilian slices are also worth stopping in for. Prices range from about $3-$5 per slice.
Hot and cold heros like the "Italian Combo" with ham, salami and provolone make for a nice light meal. You will also find classics sandwiches like sausage & peppers, veal and chicken parmigiana. All are served on crunchy Italian bread. Housemade pastas, salads, calzones and pinwheels are also available.
Service at Little Italy is friendly. They also know how to move the crowd along when things get busy.
