Cititour Review:

If you’re looking for a breezy ambiance and a relaxing meal, Lokal (pronounced ‘Low-Cal,’ as in California) is the perfect spot.  While the menu contains mostly American-style food, dishes like the pizzas, the yellow fin tuna and the lamb burger have a distinct Mediterranean flare.  Formerly the site of an old warehouse, the restaurant is conveniently located on the corner of Nassau and Lorimer, right across from McCarren Park.  The atmosphere is especially charming in the warmer seasons, when one can dine out on the sidewalk terrace and watch the eclectic passers by.  They also have an acoustic jazz trio perform weekly.

The decorations are what make the place memorable, with DIY glass mosaics, potted palms and sand under the glass tables, which gives off the feel of a vacation on a Greek island.  (And the bathrooms are also worth looking at just for the decorations). The executive chef, Luis, is always there and will probably come to your table just to say hello and make sure you’re enjoying your food. The staff are personable and friendly, though they don’t write down orders, which may result in the occasional mistake.

Be sure to try the French fries, which are seasoned with flecks of fresh rosemary—a highlight of the dining experience.  The sandwiches are doused with an ample amount of basil-seasoned mayonnaise, so beware if you are not a mayo fan, and ‘medium’ is the equivalent of ‘rare’ at this restaurant, so make sure to order your burger well done if you don’t like pink meat.

Overall, the service is good and the prices are reasonable (between $6-$14 for appetizers, $8-$19 for entrees, dinner and lunch), and there is a great beer and wine selection.  It is bound to become a regular favorite for anyone in the neighborhood, and a fun place to visit as a family.
