John Verlander is the force behind this pint-size restaurant cooking up authentic creole dishes when he's not shucking oysters. There are just two tables up front with additional seating at a long wooden bar. The place is done up quite nicely and fills up quickly. Lowerline specializes in po-boy sandwiches, including one made with delicately fried shrimp with lettuce, tomato and pickles on a toasted Caputo's roll. Others include fried oysters and roast beef dripping with Debris brown gravy, a New Orleans' favorite. The restaurant also offers half a po-boy with a cup of gumbo. The gumbo is excellent made with blue crab, gulf shrimp, oysters and okra in a decadent dark brown roux. Other dishes include Barbecued Shrimp (head-on jumbo shrimp in a black pepper and Worcestershire butter sauce), Ham Bone Red Beans & Rice, and Crawfish Etouffee ( crawfish tails in a rich shelfish gravy). And of course there are fresh oysters from the East and West Coasts, along with beer and wine. Lowerline aims high and it shows.
