One of the unsung heroes of the baked goods world, popovers take center stage at this Upper West Side café. The mini cousin of Yorkshire pudding, these eggy, custardy muffins are the main reason to pull up a chair at this sweet little place. That being said, man cannot survive on popovers alone—as much as he may try, swiped with the delicious strawberry butter that comes alongside them. Order a basket of three for the table (7.25), and then try one of the many brunch-esque choices on offer.
At breakfast, order a flopover (10.95-11.95). Described as a hearty baked crepe, these delicious dishes taste just like the namesake popovers, but with fillings like apples and cinnamon, mozzarella and tomatoes or brie, pears and ham. Eggs Benedict fans will devour this version, with smoked salmon, lemon hollandaise and a popover in place of the usual English muffin (13.25).
If you're in more of a lunch mood, try a prime sirloin burger (9.95) which, upon request, will be served on a popover instead of a bun; this is a request you most definitely want to make. Soups and salads are also served with a popover on the side, a good deal at under 20 dollars apiece, considering the price of a single side order of popover (2.75). Then again, one bite of the hot, eggy, melt-in-your mouth interior, and you'll be sold.
If you'd prefer, the restaurant recently started selling mini-versions of their original popovers: four minis are both the price and equivalent size of one large popover, and they are also available via the Popover Café website for mail order.
