New York City is certainly the kind of place to go from rags to riches, but have you ever heard of Rice to Riches? If not, you really need to check this place out soon. Rice to Riches is a quirky little rice pudding parlor in Little Italy dedicated to those totally obsessed with the dessert.
The "in your face" marketing in the windows is hysterical! And whether or not you like rice pudding, you'll stop dead in your "I'm a New Yorker and I'm in a hurry" tracks to read it. I couldn't get over some of the signs, "Sin Legally", "Eat Now, Think Later", "These Premises Are Occupied By Compulsively Dessert Loving People With No Self-Control Or Discipline", and "If Lovin' Rice Pudding Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right."
After about 5 minutes of reading and a smile glued to my face, of course I went in. I love rice pudding! The place was packed and it felt just like being in an ice cream parlor. Flavors of pudding lined up inside glass cases, employees offering samples on little plastic spoons, mirrors on the walls, and stools to sit down, relax, and enjoy your treat.
The flavors are abundant with year round or seasonal selections. Instead of the one or two scoop ice cream concept, however, try the Diva ($4), Solo ($6.75), Epic ($8.50) or Omni ($12.50) servings. If you're a real lover of this creamy sweet stuff or have a family of 10 to feed, the Sumo at 40 ounces or Moby at 80 may do the job. I sampled two flavors, Carmel Raspberry and Rocky Road, deciding on a Diva portion of Rocky Road. I'm not into Sumo wrestlers or whales for that matter.
Rice to Riches is the kind of place that screams Only in New York. So move over ice cream, rice pudding has arrived!
