The cuisine at Rue 57 is fusion at its finest. This French, yet Japanese establishment is described as a ‘Brasserie Parisienne et Sushi Bar’. The décor is definitely French bistro, yet the menu takes a mind all of its own incorporating tasty versions of classic French food alongside sushi. You will also find dishes bordering on Italian, and even the very Mediterranean lamb and goat cheese sliders ($17.25), on the sprawling menu.
The restaurant is bustling, especially on a Saturday night. I loved the lively ambiance, making it the perfect dinner destination for a night on the town. Our party decided to embrace the fusion aspect of the menu and order from all around the globe. The pan seared dumplings with spiced cabbage and seaweed salad ($10.75) turned out to be my favorite. The dumplings have a soft yet rich texture. We also included the beef carpaccio ($10.75) and yellow fin tuna tartare ($15.75) with its creamy flavor among our hors d’oeuvres.
The Steak Frites portion of the menu offers beef any which way you like it. You might want to try the trio of mini kobe burgers ($17.25). The doll-size portions are very appealing. I chose the sea scallops ($29.00) for my entrée. Luckily my favorite dish was the ‘plat du jour’ for Saturday! Each scallop was perfectly tender and the truffle mashed potato were of a rich, melt-in-your-mouth quality. The chicken Milanese ($24.75) also does much to impress.
We could do little to ignore the sushi bar on the right side of the menu so alas we ordered some sashimi and the spicy king crab roll with asparagus, shrimp, and sweet spicy sauce ($19.50). This roll was crispy with a playful spicy and sweet flavor that really pops in the mouth.
Incorporating such different cuisines might seem like a challenge, however at Rue 57 it brings a uniqueness to the restaurant. It is a great way to satisfy each person in a party, whether it be a large group of 10 or a dinner for two.
