Spice is my number one destination for my weekly Thai cravings. Located just one block from Astor Place, Spice is serving up reasonably-priced dishes for New York City’s pocket-conscious masses. If you wander in at lunch time, you can enjoy the lunch box special, which includes two side dishes and an entrée for $9.50.The restaurant itself has a modern Asian flair with very good service no matter how many customers fill the room. I love to start with the emerald steamed dumplings to share ($5) with a black plum dipping sauce, and crispy spring rolls ($4) that offer a hint of basil. The warm duck lettuce wraps ($7) also make a great first course.
If you enjoy soup, the ginger basil ($4) tastes just as delicious as it sounds. And what would a Thai restaurant be without Pad Thai ($10)? Here it is topped with egg, bean sprouts, scallions and chopped peanuts. All of the noodle dishes are served with your choice of chicken, beef, shrimp, veggie, or tofu. The Masaman crispy noodles and Phuket pineapple fried rice are also solid main course options.
The menu also features several curry dishes, including red, green, and spicy Panang for $11. Entrees range from tasty teriyaki salmon ($15) and pork belly with Chinese broccoli ($11) to five different duck options. Spice crispy duck ($15) combines ginger, mushrooms and pineapple in a sweet and sour sauce.
If the price alone doesn’t lure you to the Astor Place location, then perhaps the flavor will. I was also very pleased with the portion sizes. Each plate contains plenty to eat, but not enough to leave you feeling overstuffed. Spice is a bit trendy, yet with all that it has to offer it can easily turn into a staple.
