Cititour Review:

The opening of Steak 'n Shake had all the glitz of a Hollywood premiere.  Women in bright red jackets and black mini skirts handing out menus, as a line three rows thick waited to get in.  Onlookers stopping traffic to catch a glimpse.  And by now you're probably asking, is it worth the wait?  The answer in a moment.  First a peak at what you will find inside.

The restaurant has a hip diner feel.  There is a bright red counter with funky red and white lamps, and a bright yellow stripe that ties it all together.  To the side are two big soda machines where you can add some Coke to your Mello Yello or any other combo you can come up with.

The space itself is pretty small with seating for about twenty.  But there is ample counter space where you can stand and eat. Watching the chaotic scene inside - I couldn't help but get the feel that these out-of-towners were a bit lost in the big city.  After all, Steak 'n Shake is far from home.  The chain was founded by Gus Belt in 1934 in Normal, Illinois, far away from us city slickers.  It quickly spread through the Midwest and South, but this is its first New York City location and there was electricity in the air.

Now to the burgers.  First off, there aren't too many places in the city where $3.99 will buy you a double cheesburger and fries. Here it will.  Add in a drink, which you are free to refill, for an extra buck and you're pretty much set.  Or, visit the shake station for a frosty treat in flavors like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and banana.  Or, design your own shake by adding in things like M&M's, peanut butter cups and Butterfingers.

As for the burgers, aside from the double cheese, you will also get a "Signature Steakburger 'n Fries" ($5.99).  It's made with 100 percent organic beef with cuts of Ribeye and New York Strip.  The burger is thick and juicy with lots of melted cheese on top, along with slices of red onion, pickles and lettuce.  Oh, I forgot.  It's also delicious!  The fries are also quite good.  Think curly shoestrings.  You will also find steakburgers topped fresh guacamole, hickory bacon with fried onions, or go for a Frisco Melt made with Swiss and American cheese.  The menu also features steak franks and a chili steak franks.

All I can say is shake your booty and give Steak 'n Shake a try.  It' s located right next door to the Ed Sullivan Theater.  Who knows, maybe you'll catch Letterman on line.
