Cititour Review:

Comfort food is hard to come by near Rockefeller Center.  But Taam Tov in the heart of the Diamond District is a diamond in the rough.  Just one small banner hovering high above 47th Street signals that its even there.  Climb up three flights into a modest dining room and that is where the flavor begins.

Taam Tov specializes in Bukharan cuisine, a mix of Eastern European and mediterranean dishes that also happen to be Glatt Kosher.  Start with a Samsa, a baked meat pies sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.  The crust is light and flaky while the rich onion and beef filling offers a hint of citrus.  They are remarkable, and at three bucks apiece, a very cheap lunch.  There are also beef dumplings called Manty.

I am also a big fan of the Borsch, an Eastern European soup chock full of stewed tomatoes, cabbage, beets mingling with savory slices of beef. Cumin and fresh cilantro add to the soup's deep flavors.  A bowl costs $4.50 and came with large slab of homemade bread called Lepeshka that is thick and fluffy, and perfect for dipping.  Other soups include Pelmeny made with beef ravioli ($6), and Kharcho ($6), a heavily-spiced beef bouillion and rice soup that originates from Georgia.

The menu also features an assortment of kebabs (beef, lamb and chicken) served with rice, along with lamb ribs and chicken wings.  Beef stroganoff makes an appearance, as does stuffed cabbage.
