Now here's a tenement where there is no slumming around. The Tenement restaurant on Ludlow Street in the East Village looks like a small storefront from the outside. But looks can be deceiving. Inside, you'll find a romantic setting with cushy banquettes, wooden tables and lots of candles. There's also an outdoor garden when weather permits, a hopping bar and a DJ on weekends. The food isn't your traditional tenement fare, although some dishes may evoke tenement life, like the mac and cheese and crisp potato pancakes with homemade apple sauce. There are also pierogies and BLTs. Main dishes go a bit further, like the horseradish encrusted salmon on a bed of mashed potatoes and freshly cooked spinach. Or a heaping helping of spiced up Southern fried chicken that was cooked to perfection and served with sweet potato mashed and a grilled ear of corn, a real fill-er-upper. Prices are moderate with entrees in the $15-$20 range. In these tough times, Tenement is worth a try.
