Modern Asian comes alive in the Bowery with The General, a sprawling restaurant and bar. The man behind the innovative menu is Top Chef winner Hung Huynh who is teaming up with EMM group, the same folks who brought the seafood mecca, Catch, to the Meatpacking district. Seafood is also evident here, from a Mercy Roll made with spicy tuna, jalapeno salt and salsa verde to Ribbons of Tuna with Asian pear, avocado and black sesame. There are dumplings and buns, like the Philly Peppersteak Sticky Buns, and Hung's Fried Rice with sausage, shrimp and egg. Braised short ribs play a starring role in The General's take on beef and broccoli. Desserts also give a nod to the orient. Executive Pastry Chef Thiago Silva is turning heads with his cheesecake spring rolls served with sake poached plums, and Thai basil ice cream. Or, sit back and enjoy a cocktail like The Battle of the Bowery. This concoction mixes Befeater gin with yuzu, a Chandon float and a twist of lemon. The General is a sultry escape from city life with its candy apple red chairs and black lacquered tables. Exposed ceiling beams and Asian inspired wallpaper add to its seductive allure. But it doesn't end there. Because after dinner there's dancing. This multi-concept venue also features the nightlife venue, Finale, and subterranean lounge, Bow, all under one roof. Now, that's what I call an all-nighter! - Thomas Rafael

Cititour Review:

Yet another fine Asian-American fusion restaurants has entered the city's cultured atmosphere. A tasty see-and-be-seen addition to the megaplex down on Bowery (now fully loaded with a lounge and nightclub), brought to you by the same connoisseurs of EMM group, who bring us the fresh flavors of Catch and Abe and Arthur's in Meatpacking.

The inviting atmosphere begins its magic as soon as you enter the door. Clusters of patrons mingle around the large bar directly behind the host stand, bathed in warm lighting. The dining room is large and packed with tables. Ornate brocade wallpaper in red warms the room, reminding us of the hint of the flavors of the Orient.

Atmosphere aside, the General cooks up some great items, ideal for family style dining. The large tables fit a gigantic variety of sushi and sashimi, served on a wooden ship worthy of the Navy. Hot plates of reliable dishes are the specialty here. I love the tender Miso Bourbon Sea Bass entree and the chicken tacos; easy and delicious.  Dress your table with heaps of chicken fried rice, tender pods of edamame with wasabi salt, and dark strips of wagyu beef. The green tea lobster tempura is a large platter of crispy, rich flavor that cannot be missed. Enjoy it all underneath the enchanting wands of light that dangle magically from the dark ceiling.

The trendy and attractive crowd, not to mention the specialty cocktails, and mounds of scrumptious food should make your dining decisions easy. Don't hesitate to head over to the Lower East Side for the tasty meal waiting at The General.
