Cititour Review:

Looking for a very special beer that you’ve been wanting to sample? Checking out NYU or attending a performance at the magnificent theater housed in the Skirball Center? Enjoying the scene at Washington Square Park?  If you need to stop for a bite, drink or both, drop into The Half Pint, an engaging pub in the area.

Informality rules here starting with a friendly greeting. Sidle up to the massive bar for one of the over three hundred kinds of beer available including an impressive twenty-four on tap. Or, ask for a table and sit back.

Brunch is deservedly popular with gigantic portions and a large screen if watching sports while you hang out is your thing. The buttermilk fried chicken sits atop a waffle, banked by a pile of whipped cream, the whole served with a pitcher of maple syrup.  Two hands will be required to heft the 2 Handed BLAT, a monster sandwich featuring lettuce, tomato, thick-cut bacon and hearty hunks of avocado, the whole slathered with lemon-spiked mayo. Mac-and-cheese is served in a small, iron skillet while the basic burger ($12 with very good house fries) can be modified with a fried egg, avocado, bacon, cremini mushrooms and many other add-ons.

The regular food menu is built to soak up alcohol  with wings, loaded nachos, burgers (including one with falafel, a turkey version and the “Angry Burger” topped with blue cheese, crisp onions and Frank’s Hot Sauce all on order.

Victoria Delaney and her partners opened the Half Pint in 2007 and own several other bars, some in the immediate area. Among the draft beers are: Stella Artois (Belgium), Weihenstephan Hefe Weissbier (Germany), Bluepoint (NY), Boddingtons (UK), Brooklyn Lager (NY), Bud (Missouri), Chimay Triple (Belgium), Delirium Tremens (Belgium), Guinness (Ireland), Lagunitas (CA), Goose Island IPA, Leffe Blonde (Belgium), Duvel Green, Sierra Nevada, Hoegaarden (Belgium), Magic Hat Vinyl, and Ommegang Hennepin. Other drafts rotate and there are also bottled beers from around the world.

There are also a number of rotating drafts such as Coney Island Lager, Speakeasy Tallulah.  The daily Happy Hour from 4-6 PM is lively with college students piling in for beer and a hit of carbs like the cheese curds, here in a “crispy coating.” Should  the non-carb lobby be in  attendance, salads (spinach, kale Caesar, grilled chicken) are on the menu as are the build a burger/sandwich features with ample offerings to compose your eats to suit. Sandwiches clock in at $14.50; burgers hover in the $13-14 range with the meat cooked as requested. Hand cut eight  grain bread is hearty but not overbearing with enough muscle to stand up to fillings.

Fridays and Saturdays the kitchen stays open until 2 AM to satisfy midnight and after cravings. Private parties?
