Details:

Riverview was once a part of William K. Vanderbilt's 800 acre estate. The original portion of the restaurant, currently known as the Tea Room and marked by fireplaces on each end, was built in 1888. It was Vanderbilt's Tea House or Singing Kettle because of the huge tin kettle sign over the doorway. The launch boat, which has become our logo, was built for Commodore Borne in 1904 by Nathan Herreshoff. Mr. Borne, Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, named the 60 footer Canvasback. He used it to ferry friends from his estate, which is now La Salle Military Academy, to his yacht, anchored offshore outside the Fire Island Inlet. Among Commodore Borne's personal friends was William K. Vanderbilt. They both enjoyed gathering at the Singing Kettle after a sail. Canvasback cruised the waters of the Great South Bay until it was sold to Charles Gulden, the famous mustard king. It was eventually purchased by the father of the Lessing Family, which now operates Riverview. by Kathleen 05/15/08
