Cititour Review:

For those seeking a super-casual meal in the East 70s, the new Trend Diner is here. On the plus side, it's clean. The waiters are fairly attentive although mine forgot to ask if I wanted the uneaten half of my sandwich wrapped to leave with me. There is bar seating along one side and tables in the rest of the room that boasts aggressively salmon-colored walls. The place is frill-free as is the food which some enjoy but I found overly dry, especially a classic egg-and-sausage on a roll which would have been vastly improved with even a hint of butter on the bread. Trend is uncrowned which is good or bad depending on your point of view; you can always snag a spot to sit but I suspect the owner would prefer more traffic--another casualty of the Second Avenue subway mess-up. Prices are on the high side which isn't surprising given the location and may also cut into trade.

Breakfast is the star of the show here with omelets of the world (Florentine, Californian, Mexican, El Paso meaning chili and jalapeños, Garden with veggies and more) as well as Eggs Benedicts hailing from Florence with spinach and Feta cheese; Alaska (with "nova scotia lox" --an unfamiliar breed since it's usually Nova Scotia salmon or lox, a different cut and preparation of the fish, and Mexicana with pico de gallo and salsa. The home fries looked good.

Signature Wacky Fries translates as Curly, Waffle, Classic (with melted cheese--aren't those cheese fries?) Pizza and a new one on me, Disco, with melted American cheese and brown gravy. Three Stooges Fries brings the triple threat of  mozzarella, American and cheddar cheeses.

Trend serves burgers like the John Wayne with bacon on a brioche, the usual line-up of sandwiches including wraps on whole wheat and a Crab Po' Boy; pastas ranging from tortellini with pesto and penne in vodka sauce. Dinner entrees bring tilapia in a "crab crust" served with spinach, scallops and a steak frites. There are gooey desserts like peanut butter pie, Oreo Cheesecake and --no kidding-- bacon-fried bananas served with vanilla ice cream, cinnamon sugar and caramel sauce. Shakes, smoothies and coffee in various guises round out the menu which is probably overly ambitious especially in a smallish space. Putting more thought into fewer items might rescue what is basically a diner in an upmarket area.

Trend is open from 7 AM to midnight and does takeout, delivery and online ordering.
