Cititour Review:

Located just blocks from the fame Union Square market, the Union Square Cafe, at its new location on 19th Street, remains synonymous with style and flair. It’s a place that’s elegant without being stand-offish. Where a young family can easily enjoy a meal, as well as a couple out on the town. There’s a main dining room on the ground level with additional table service along a second floor balcony. Inventive cocktails, craft beers and a lengthy wine list are offered at two bars. But the real draw is the food.

Brunch begins with rustic breads with whipped butter and olives livened up with orange zest. Frito Misto,  lightly fried calamari, cod, peppers and broccoli, is served with a splash of lemon and an addictive aioli.  Nantucket Bay Scallops, soft and silky, get a spattering of pickled pepper flakes and the tiniest sunchoke chips imaginable. Other appetizers include French Onion Soup, Polenta with maitake mushrooms and Burrata with cauliflower, concord grape and rye crisps.

The USC Burger is a welcome choice as a main course. It’s a monster-sized patty topped with crisp bacon, Beecher’s flagship cheddar on a brioche bun along with a pile of crispy hand-cut fries. The cost is $29, but worth every penny. We also shared a plate of Autumn Squash Tortellini in a sage brown butter sauce with plump cranberries. Roasted chicken, trout and grilled lamb chops are also on the menu, but you can easily jump from savory to sweet with dishes buttermilk pancakes with concord syrup and lime curd or brioche French toast with roasted pears and hazelnuts.

Pear Mille-Feuille makes for a wonderful finale. It's layered with goat cheese mousse and poached pear.   We loved our brunch at Union Square Cafe. Next time it will be dinner. See more
