New York has a little bit of everything… including Paris. At the Vanguard Wine Bar, music and low lighting transport you into the past in the City of Lights. There’s a distinctive absence of kitsch; Vanguard doesn’t try too hard to be Parisian, and, perhaps because of this, it evokes the atmosphere effortlessly.
The menu is European in influence as well: trendy American small plates feature unmistakable French flavors, like charcuterie and cheese platters (18), open-faced tartines with everything from sautéed kale (7) to shrimp with leeks and saffron aioli (9) and savory tartes. The dessert standout is certainly the Champagne float with vanilla bean ice cream (10).
The wine list is perfect for those unschooled in the world of wine. It’s organized by color, body and taste, so that even those unfamiliar with different varietals can select something that they like. Both French and American bottles and glasses are featured on the extensive, ever-changing list.
Vanguard is a wine bar in every sense of the term. It’s a comfortable place to enjoy a few glasses or a bottle, and the accompanying food choices allow for the evening to extend late into the night.
