Review:

Chiles and Chocolate is a new spot in Park Slope, Brooklyn specializing in the cuisine of southern Mexico. The space is decorated with oversized mirrors and ornate wooden chairs and tables that look like they might belong in a Mexican palace.

The signiture dish is Moles Oaxaquenos ($15), which offers several types of meat smothered in one of three traditional moles; red, green or black. We sampled the Moles Negro, slices of stewed pork smothered in a delicious sauce made from dried chiles and chocolate, and sprinkled with sesame seeds. You'll also find guacamole with fried grasshoppers on top ($7) and grilled duck breast in a peanut chocolate chipotle sauce ($16). There are also tamales sweetened with Oaxacan chocolate and golden raisins ($4) and Mexican style hot chocolate with ground cinnamon and almonds ($3)

Chiles and Chocolate still has some minor kinks to iron out, but it's authentic Oaxacan cooking adds some spice to city life.

The most authentic
I have been to this restaurant several times now and I am always very pleased. It is the most authentic Mexican food in nyc. From the sauces and the cuts of meat, to the very sexy delicious flan dessert, they'll be seeing me again and again. In fact I will be there next week, with even more friends to share this very affordable, delicious experience.

i know food, and i thought it was the best on 7th
i am addicted to this little place. i literally get take out twice a week. My favorite is the chicked enchilada, and the salad w/ grilled chicken. I think it is a really good date place cause it is dark and romantic.

I thought this place was just ok. It's very cramped - 6 tables total I think. Food was ok, but portions were small and a little too pricy. Not great alternatives to meat/seafood. Good mole sauce though - and loved the pico!

Great Mexican food in North Slope
This place was great. We started with zucchini quesadillas, which had excellent flavor and texture. We also tried the tacos dorados rufina which were yummy, if a little one-note. For entrees, we had pork in the coloradito mole sauce, which was the highlight of the meal, subtle rich flavors and perfectly cooked pork. We also tried the tamales del dia, (queso and peppers), which were good, but seem a little thin for an entree. Over all though, eating here was a great experience.

Overrated!
Chiles and Chocolate has put much thought into its decor and signage and positioning in the culinary marketplace. But on two separate visits, the food was mediocre and the place was freezing (in February). I hope the place gets a real chef and works out those kinks soon...
