Summary:
Good things do come in small packages. Dominique Ansel is proof of that. The former Executive Pastry Chef at Daniel, while it maintained a 4-star rating from the New York Times and 3 stars from Michelin, has opened a stylish new shop in the heart of SoHo to show off his delicious creations.
There are breakfast treats like the "DKA" (Dominique's Kouign Amann) made with a croissant-like dough with a crunchy crust. He's also serving what he calls the Perfect Little Egg Sandwich; farm fresh eggs topped with gruyere in a warm brioche bun for just about the price of an Egg McMuffin.
Singature sweets include an assortment of miniature tarts that run about $5 apiece. There is a mini coconut mango cake that is light and airy, a traditional apple tart tatin and a raspberry-pistachio tart. A mini cheesecake lives up to its "cotton-soft" name, while a double shot espresso dark chocolate cake promises an added jolt to your sugar fix. You will also find gluten free desserts like the "Mini-Me" cake, and a black & white eclair that the shop boasts is twice as good as the cookie.
Dominique Ansel is also offering homemade soups, salads and sandwiches, like the Croque Monsieur ($10.50), that is assembled and cooked on the spot. Savory items are sold daily from noon to 4pm.
Or, simply rest your bones at one of their cafe-style tables while sipping a nice espresso or a hot chocolate topped with frosty chocolate foam. Now that's sweet! - Thomas Rafael
