Review:
If you've always wanted to visit Philippe, the high-end Chinese restaurant, where you could easily drop forty dollars on lobster satay or eighty-five bucks on red king crab, then you'll be happen to know about Philippe's new place for lesser mortals.
Across the way from Laurent Tourondel's BLT Burger you'll now find Philippe Chow Express. But this isn't any ordinary Chinese takeout. In fact, once you get there you'll probably want to eat in. Here you'll find bright red leather banquettes, black laquered tables and bar with ruby red stools.
Orders are taken via a kiosk that looks more like an atm machine and the food is picked up at the bar. If you decide to eat in, your food will be served on fine china, not paper plates.
Pick from an array of tempting appetizers from salt and pepper shrimp, Peking duck spring rolls, Singapore noodles, shrimp toast and jade dumplings made with shrimp and water chestnuts. Prices run from $3 to $9 each. Entrees won't break the bank either. Sweet and sour Alaskan Halibut runs $16, Kung Pao chicken in a spicy peanut sauce $11, and Filet Mignon with broccoli for $16.
That should save you a fortune... cookie!

I live nearby and was puzzled from the start that another Chinese place would open within sight of several others and with prices out of scale to the competition. ($5 for hot and sour soup??) You have to bus your own table, and if you order your meal all at once which the uninitiated might do (like in a real restaurant), your entree grows cold while you eat your soup. The 2 items which interested me on their initial menu (from their uptown local) are NOT even on the menu downtown.
