Review:
Gazing from the window of Son Cubano onto the
cobblestone road one might imagine that they are in Cuba. An early arrival to the Meatpacking District, the restaurant offers a warm atmosphere with a definite Latin flair. Pictures of old Cuba line the walls and while this place lights up on weekends, it's actually a very nice place for a quiet lunch.
Start with some coconut shrimp or empanadas. The Papitas Rellenas Con Picadillo, golfball-size potato croquettes stuffed with meat and peas, also makes for a great appetizer.
Ropa Vieja, which actually means "Old Clothes" offers hearty
pieces of flank steak smothered in onions and peppers with a side of perfectly cooked yucca fries. Add a few Coronas or a Cuba Libre and you're set. Other noteworthy entrees include Salmon En Salsa Mango, Atlantic salmon sautéed in a tangy mango sauce ($20) and Mariscada En Salsa De Ajo, mixed seafood sautéed in garlic ($23).
Desserts include traditional flan and cinnamon rice pudding, and a super sweet sponge cake known as Tres Leche.
On weekends Son Cubano is transformed into a night club as tables are removed to make room for live entertainment and dancing. And is known to have some celebrity sightings.
Get there early and make a night of it!
