One sign of a popular restaurant is when it is packed on a somewhat dreary Monday evening when most other nearby restaurants are not. Anton’s by Chef/Owner Nick Anderer (Marta, Maialino, Gramercy Tavern, Babbo) has that kind of feel. A hot spot, but too hot to remember where it is coming from, like leaving just enough seats for walk-ins so neighbors don’t feel locked out. That’s the kind of feeling you get at Anton’s located in a landmark 1850s Greek-Revival building on Hudson Street in the West Village offering a taste of old New York. The menu also reflects that. At the bar are bites like Whitefish Salad & Crackers, City Ham, Country Ham, and a cup of Chicken Broth. Oysters and top necks are served raw or broiled, and at least six types of pasta are offered, including Lasagnettes in Anton's Ragu. Larger plates include hearty fare like a Grilled Pork Rib Chop with apple sauce, Hangar Steak Lorenz with melted onions, and Roasted Heritage Chicken, half or whole. Desserts are borrowed from old family recipes and come with names like Kiss Me Pudding and Warm Apple Crisp a la Mode. Anton’s has the feel like it’s been around forever. It’s hard to believe it just arrived.
