This sushi restaurant from Jonathan Morr, co-owner of Bond St, is a sure departure from sushi joints that concentrate solely on the food with little regard for ambiance. Not that the menu is anything to scoff at, but a diner’s first impression at Cherry is certainly its modernity, particularly in comparison with more simplistic sushi bars. Cherry takes the place of short-lived Romera, downstairs from the Dream hotel, and its location in Chelsea only adds to the attraction. The dimly lit hotel restaurant is covered in red velvet and gold brocade, drawing in the fashionable local crowd. As for the food, it’s the real attraction. The menu is divided into several categories that effortlessly straddle the line between French and Japanese cuisine. Chef Andy Choi, previously of Le Cirque, offers such dishes as a Japanese play on salade niçoise (17) with seared tuna and sea bean tempura or a foie gras shortrib gyoza (17) with plum sake glaze and sour cherries. The menu also includes more traditional Japanese dishes, like sushi, sashimi and tempura, and more traditional French selections, like a duck à l’orange appetizer (18) or brick pressed poussin (24) Sake is the star of the drink menu thanks to sake specialist Chris Johnson, with several different varieties to choose from. - Emily Monaco
