Cititour Review:

Friedman's newsest location is in an up-and-coming area not too far from the Javitz Center on 35th Street and Tenth Avenue where new highrises are popping up all over the place, and good restaurants are far and few in between.  That might explain the healthy crowd, but the quality of the food and friendly service are also a big draw.

Located in an old brick building with arched windows, I immediately fell in love with the space.  Booths have the appearance of reclaimed wood.  There are wide plank floors and a full bar up front that is hopping.   The restaurants offers four beers on tap and more by the bottle.  Wine and mixed drinks are also offered.  The space also has good accoustics where you can actually enjoy a conversation.

The menu features things that we've come to expect from Friedman's, comforting foods like matzo ball soup, a smoked bacon, lettuce & tomato sandwich, and a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich.  Oversized salads include one with grilled chicken, cranberries and walnuts, while an Asian chop salad comes with a hoison peanut sauce.

We started with a crispy pork belly appetizer.   Large chunks of meat placed atop a bed of greens with heirloom tomatoes and a tangy vinaigrette.  It is a bit of an oxymoron.  The pork belly is rich and fatty sitting on these healthy greens.  We ate it up.  I ordered the fish tacos for a main course, while my son got the Friedman's burger.  The burger is about and inch thick with juices flowing with each bite.  Crispy bacon and blue cheese were also added.  The burger comes with a nice helping of hand-cut herbed fries that are crisp and delicious.  The fish tacos are also great.  Three soft tacos with a citrus fennel slaw toped with a thick slice of pan-seared fish.  Two sauce are placed on top.  One is a tomatillo salsa, the other a sriracha aoli.  It's then sprinkled with fresh cilantro.  They are among the best fish tacos I've tasted.

In all, Friedman's is fabulous.
