Cititour Review:

Why spend $35 or more for a great steak when you can spend $20 or under? Gaucho Steak Co., a new spot in Hell's Kitchen, is offering flavorful steaks at discount prices in a neat little place on tenth avenue. The space is decorated in a rawhide look with burnt wood, leather tableclothes, bits of exposed brick and banquettes covered in cowskin (not a place for vegetarians). The menu features jumbo sized empanadas ($3) to start. We sampled the chicken and oxtail. Both were delicious, as was an order of chorizo and blood sausage ($6) served on a bed of roasted onions. But the appetizer that got the table talking was the Chicharron ($9). Usually this dish is traditionally made with with pork that is deep fried until crispy. But the best way to describe this dish might be General Tsao's chicken meets calamari with a touch of pad thai. It was a mass of crispy calamari rings with a sweet sauce atop a bed of sliced cucumbers. It's then topped with ground peanuts, black sesame seeds and baby pea leaves. It was the most unusual combination I've tried lately and a tasty one at that. It definitely gets a ten for originality. White and red sangria is made fresh, but at $24 a pitcher is a bit pricey. We'd probably opt for a nice bottle of red wine next time around. As for the steaks, this Argentine steakhouse sells only grass fed Patagonic free range beef imported from South America. We sampled the Rib Eye ($20), Skirt Steak ($14) and NY Strip Steak ($18). All were tender and arrived exactly as ordered. But the winner hands down was the rib eye, a huge slab of beef, served perfectly rare, that thoroughly was enjoyed until the very last bite (lick the plate clean good). Sides included sauteed mushrooms in a tasty garlic sauce, fluffy mashed potatoes and mushroom rice. Desserts are limited and a noticable weak spot. The creme brulee tasted more like flan, and a Nutella-stuffed tortilla arrived a bit too burnt along the edges. Still, we enjoyed a wonderful meal at Gaucho Steak Co. Our party left stuffed and ready to return for another steak feast!
