On a corner known for its quick turnover of restaurants, Giacomo's appears to have some staying power. With its brick oven fired up, Giacomo's is turning out some terrific pies and traditional Italian dishes in a warm and relaxed setting.
Start with some mini calzones plumped up with ricotta ($6) and fried calamari ($9) that is crispy and golden brown. Each is served with a rich marinara sauce for dipping. The baked clams ($9.50) are also worth noting served with a nice layer of garlicky breading.
Pizzas, fresh from the oven, arrive with a nice char and a surprisingly thin crust. Choosing one is difficult since there are so many good-sounding choices. After much debate we settled on a sausage pie topped fresh mozzarella and slices of sweet Italian sausage that my son loved. I went for the Quattro Stagione ($14/$21) loaded up with mozzarella, mushrooms, artichokes, olives and prosciutto. It was so filling that I had two slices left over that made for a nice little lunch the following day.
The menu also features a 3-cheese white pie called the"Bianca," the "Arrabbiata" topped with grilled chicken and cherry peppers, and the "Siciliana" with eggplant, ricotta and grated parmigiano. Or simply design your own pie. You will also find Italian heroes made on toasty ciabatta bread fresh from the brick oven. They include chicken and veal parmigiana, meatball, and pepper and eggs ($6-$9). Hot pressed panini sandwiches get their names here from famous Italian places like the Capri made with prosciutto, roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella ($9.50), and the Venice with broccoli rabe and sausage ($7.50). Entrees range from Italian classics like Shrimp Fra Diavolo ($16.95) served with linguine to eggplant rollatini ($11.95) and veal parmigiana ($16.95). You will also find grilled pork chops and a rib eye served with Italian-style fries.
For dessert, try the Nutella calzone served straight from the oven with its molten filling of mascarpone and nutella. Warning. It is quite addictive.
