Mama T on the Upper East Side is a homestyle café created by Elizabeth Powell Gorai in honor of her late “Mama Tars,” Tarcela Cabunilas Perales, who immigrated from the Philippines and became a central figure in her family’s life and cooking tradition. Inspired by decades of shared recipes and restaurant experience—including the family’s pan-Asian restaurant, East of Suez—the café features legacy dishes and sweets connected to Mama Tars’ kitchen, such as sinigang, adobo, leche flan, snowflake cookies, and ensaymada. Mama T serves as a tribute to her influence, preserving family recipes and food memories in a casual neighborhood setting.
