Cititour Review:

If the word 'Peels' calls to mind a freshly peeled lemon or a treat spritzed with lime zest, then downtown entrepreneur Taavo Somer, the man behind the ultra popular Freemans, has done his job right.  Peels, his latest endeavor, is a refreshing sight on the Bowery, with its airy, open space, clean white walls and country wooden tables. It's minimalist approach to decor is made up for with it's bold Southern American cuisine.

Settle down at the long communal table dominating the first floor of this bi-level restaurant and build your own biscuit from my favorite section of the menu. Layer a warm and flaky southern style biscuit with a variety of cheeses, bacon, and avocado for a unique sandwich.  Other favorites include the melt-in-your-mouth chicken sandwich and the low-country style shrimp and jalapeño grits, complete with a fried egg.  The BBQ brisket sandwich is also worth a try. Most southerners are skeptical of any BBQ north of the Mason-Dixon Line, but Peels' meat tastes slow-cooked to tender perfection.

Peels is great any time of day, with noteworthy cocktails, sporting creative names such as 'Mexican Sidecar', available on all 5 of their menus, including 'late afternoon'.  The cafe selections are one of Peel's strengths; cheese platters, warm quiches, and a wide selection of fresh goods from the bakery counter.

No matter when you stop by Peels, there is always a drink and a comforting meal awaiting, and the apple pie a la mode is perfect after any bite.
