Cititour Review:

Poké (pronounced poh-kay) is the new sushi.  At Pokéworks in Midtown a line can be found out the door during peak hours for this Hawaiian favorite traditionally made with raw seafood.   A Pokéworks it can also be found with tofu and chicken.

It starts with a base of rice or salad that you can build upon with ahi tuna, salmon, seared albacore, shrimp or scallops, or a combination.  Then add on things like seaweed, cucumber and shiso leaves and flavor it with your choice of spice or Hawaiian sea salt.  Roasted macadamia nuts or toasted rice puffs can be added for some crunch.

Several signature dishes are offered.  We tried the Umami Classic with ahi tuna, green & red onion, cucumber, hijiki seaweed, umami shoyu and roasted sesame oil on a bed of rice.  It was light and refreshing.  The tuna was well-chilled and fresh.  Other dishes include the Hawaiian Classic with Ogo seaweed, Hawaiian salt, and chili flakes; the Wasabi Shrimp and Scallops prepared sous vide with masago and a wasabe aoli; and Salmon Shisu with edamame, shiso leaves and a yuzu ponzu sauce.

While you may not be able to afford a trip to Hawaii, think of this as a little side trip. Other poké spots in New York city include Wisefish Poké, East Coast Poké and Sons of Thunder.
