Some people have a dream. Others make that dream come true. That is the story of the Matt and Allison Robicelli, a somewhat quirky couple whose cupcake business began in earnest out of a trailer at the Dekalb Market in Downtown Brooklyn. They have since moved into a shiny new shop in their Bay Ridge neighborhood. Here you can watch the baking in action from their open air kitchen where the Brooklyn accents are in full force along with the whisks. As for their quirkiness, the lead story on their blog kinda says it all, declaring football the flavor of the week, and despite missing most of the NFL playoff games due to all the baking, they apparently drew some satisfaction from seeing videos of Tom Brady crying. That was followed by a post covering "Meat On Top Of Cupcakes Day" marking the arrival of the "Chicken and Waffle" cupcake and an even more elusive "Buffalo Chicken" version. And of course, their claim to fame is one topped with candied bacon. At the shop, cupcakes are offered on a rotating basis and include names like the Turtle (chocolate cake topped with salted caramel buttercream and roasted pecans), the Chai Latte (Chai spiced cake with mascarpone buttercream), and the Southern Belle (banana cake with vanilla buttercream and brown butter bourbon pecans). They also have pies; Banana Cream, Chocolate Cream and individual Sweet Potato pies, and brownies, including one made with espresso, whiskey and walnuts.
