Rulin is a family-owned Chinese restaurant just south of Union Square, offering an elevated yet deeply personal take on Sichuan and Cantonese comfort food. Owned by husband-and-wife team Lane Li and Chris Wang, the restaurant marks Lane’s first Manhattan project and the most ambitious chapter following her Smorgasburg-born Noodle Lane. The menu balances refined technique with tradition, featuring dishes like Country Duck Canape with crispy rice and pickled turnip, Dan Dan Noodles with lap yuk pork belly and chili oil, Lanzhou-style beef noodle soup, and binchotan-grilled shiitake mushroom skewers. Designed by Studio Jari with lighting by Studio Atomic, the intimate 950-square-foot space centers around a hand-pulled noodle counter that turns craft into quiet performance. Open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner, Rulin reframes Chinese cuisine as thoughtful, composed, and unmistakably rooted in care.
