BobWhite is a bit of southern comfort in the heart of the city. It's a place where food is meant to be shared at a counter amid friendly conversation and sensationally good eats. Located on a stretch of Avenue C near community gardens, BobWhite is the perfect spot for a lazy Sunday afternoon or just about any time. Space is tight so adjust your schedule appropriately or be prepared to wait.
The star of the show is the fried chicken which can be had as a supper for one ($11.50) or a dinner for four ($48). The crust is perfectly crisp and golden brown, while the chicken itself is ridiculously moist and tender. We cleaned every bit off the bones. It is served with a simple choice of pure honey for sweetness or a potent hot sauce. Both work very well with the meal. It's arrives with a side of fresh slaw and an excellent biscuit. Another dish worth seeking out is the catfish. We tried the catfish sandwich ($8.50). It is lighlty crusted on the outside with a large piece of flaky fish inside. A tangy mustard sauce adding an extra kick (along with some hot sauce). There's also roasted chicken, pork chops and a grilled pimento cheese sandwich. Sides range from macaroni and cheese to Brunswick Stew and black eye peas ($3.50-$4.50).
Don't skip out without first trying dessert. I'm not really a sweets person, but their pecan pie bread pudding alone is worth a trip to Avenue C. Served with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and caramel sauce, it's sweet and salty and utterly delicious. Do not pass it up. And do not pass up BobWhite Lunch and Supper Counter for a fantastic affordable meal, and wonderful service, that you won't find anywhere else!
