Review:

Cock & Bull is a British pub and eatery located on 45th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in the heart of midtown Manhattan.  All I can say about this place is great food, great service, and what a warm and welcoming atmosphere.  I walked in and was immediately greeted and seated by a friendly host.  A huge flat screen TV, seen from anywhere in the restaurant, had the Yankees game on, while the smaller screens around it broadcasted other games.   The after work happy hour crew lined the walls and filled the seats at the bar, while businessmen and low key tourists and their children sat upstairs in the casual dining room.

The food here is British all the way, influenced by the gastro pubs of Great Britain.  Lunch and dinner are served daily and brunch is served on the weekends.    Menu items include the traditional Fish & Chips, along with Bangers & Mash, Scotch Egg, Curried Basmati Rice Salad, and Cock-A-Leekie Soup, which is a classic Scottish roasted chicken and leek soup with drunken prunes.  (Not exactly sure what makes the prunes drunk, but it did sound good.)

I opted for the Chicken Pot Pie.  I heard that they did it right here and I wanted to give it a shot.  I also ordered a British style cask beer.  What makes this beer any different than ours?  It’s served in a pint sized mug with a handle at 55 degrees, much warmer than beer in The States is served, and it’s a little flat.  It was good, but a little pricey at $9.50.  So for a second round I ordered a Harpoon IPA for $7.50.  Thought I’d get the same effect for a little less by letting it sit a while and warm up while I watched the Yankees lose to Boston…ugg!

The Chicken Pot Pie was savory and delicious!  The crust was golden brown and flaky with piping hot root vegetables and sage underneath, but the best part was the melted Stilton Bleu on top of the crust.  It really gave that last added bit of flavor to the pie.  I also ordered a side of greens.  Normally I don’t get excited about a house vinaigrette, but theirs was worth talking about.  It had just enough oil, just enough vinegar, a nice combination of herbs, and salted to perfection.

If you’re in midtown it’s worth stopping in after work or a long day of sightseeing on 5th Avenue.  The staff is so kind and attentive, British and Irish rock songs play in the background, and it’s just a very inviting place to relax and enjoy a meal.   I didn’t have room for dessert, but the host did stop by my table with a popular British candy bar to go.  It’s called a FLAKE, Cadbury puts it out.
