The flavors of Guyana arrive in Brooklyn. German's Soup just opening its first U.S. restaurant on Utica Avenue in Flatbush, Brooklyn. The restaurant is serving Creole dishes made with closely-guarded family secrets with influences from Africa, the Caribbean, India and China. The shop is run by Clinton and Hubert Urling whose late father, "German," was the inspiration for the restaurant. Dishes include slow-cooked yellow split peas with meat, plantains, and corn. Daily soups include the signature Cow Heel Soup along with oxtail, chicken, beef and vegetarian varieties. The menu features other Guyanese specialties like Pepperpot, a meat stew with cassava root, and BBQ Chicken. Side dishes include "cookup rice" made with meats and herbs in coconut milk.
