It was friday night and we had no reservations, but still decided to stop by the Lonesome Dove to see what this western bistro is all about. I guess I was expecting to find everyone in cowboy hats, but there were no urban cowgirls behind the bar, no stetsons, not one YEE-HAW in the crowd. Instead, what we found was a refined steakhouse with western influences ranging from antler chandeliers to the cactus in the window. So, we saddled up at the bar for a few cocktails and some appetizers. If you're man (or woman) enough, try a Jalepeno Margarita. But I'll warn ya they are extremely HOT... as in burn-your-lips hot. The regular margaritas are just fine and strong enough to make any cowpoke proud. They also have a rose water infused mojito that's also pretty tasty. Wine lovers will enjoy the wide selection of western wines, heavy on Sonoma and Napa Valley, with names like Craggy Range, Silver Oak and even one called Lonesome Dove. At the bar we nibbled on some buffalo corn dogs ($12). This grown-up version is nothing like the greasy corn dogs dished out at carnivals. It's more like a one-bite buffalo pop covered in cornmeal, deep fried and then dipped in a mix of chipotle ketchup and state fair sauce. They are yummy. Grilled quail quesadillas get some added zip from goat cheese ($10), while chili peppers turned up the heat on lobster raviolis ($12). The only disappointment were the boursin-stuffed kangaroo nachos ($12) which were rather bland, although we did enjoy the accompanying roasted avacado corn salad quite a bit. Chef Tim Love's menu is inventive. Entrees include New Zealand red deer chops with white truffle mac & cheese and fried artichokes ($31). Wild boar is served with sweet garlic fries and a wild cherry-wild boar mojo ($22.50). There's also a traditional New York Strip and Buffalo Ribeye served with a Serrano-lime butter. So, if it's western you crave, go west to Chelsea and Lonesome Dove.
