Chef: Jehangir Mehta

Area: Tribeca

Mumbai- born Jehangir Mehta is the brainchild behind Mehtaphor, a new restaurant at the Duane Street Hotel in Tribeca. Mehta, who got his New York start at L'Absinthe, quickly moved up the culinary ladder, opening Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Mercer Kitchen and at Rocco di Spirito's Union Pacific. He went on to partner with Didier Virot at Aix before opening Graffiti. And now comes Metaphor. The restaurant has almost a zen feel with its long communal table made from a giant slice of a tree and rippled wall coverings in warm, soothing tones. You'll also find several intimate dining areas and a dessert cocktail bar. The menu gets its inspiration from India and Asia with a French twist, relying on exotic spices and inspired by Ayurvedic principles. Dinner begins with orange ginger shrimp ceviche, and "Pop Rock" oysters with grapefruit granita (Yes those are the explosive candies you remember as a kid). There's also beef tartare served with a quacamole sorbet, and shrimp kebabs that offer the heat of Thai chilis mixed with the cool of green papaya. Lamb shank is paired with garlic sweet potatoes, and a chili ribeye gets sauteed greens. There's also a complete vegetarian menu. To satisfy your sweet tooth, try the tres leches with a coconut pineapple broth, or maybe some orange nutmeg madeleines. - Thomas Rafael
