2nd Cuisine: Sandwiches
Lately I've been drawn to the Meatpacking District. But not for all the fancier restaurants, even though they are all quite full. I'm more interested in the new assortment of cheap eats. Last week, it was Hybird and the Shack in the Back getting the buzz. This week it's Num Pang, offering a taste of Cambodia at the Chelsea Market.
This funky shop is dishing out some superb sandwiches like Hoisin Meatballs ($8.50) with jasmine rice, basil and stewed tomatoes. There is Coriander Roast Beef ($9.75), another popular choice, served with pickled turnips, celery root and a sweet soy glaze. I tried the Five-Spice Glazed Pork Belly ($8.50) on this visit. It's sweet, spicy, savory and tangy all in one bite, not to mention, a great crunch from sliced cucumber and pickled Asian pear. Num Pang's sandwiches always put a smile on my face because they are just S-O-O-O-O good.
You can grab a table inside Chelsea Market if you would like or brown bag it to the High Line for your very own picnic lunch or dinner. Be sure to grab a glass of Num Pang's homemade watermelon juice or blood orange lemonade.
