The team behind West Village restaurants Boucherie, Dominique Bistro and Olio e Piu, is bringing a new Japanese dining experience to the neighborhood with the opening of Omakase Room by Tatsu. The restaurant will present traditional omakase style dining, providing guests with an intimate chance to interact with the chef at the Hinoki-topped 8-seat sushi counter. The physical closeness between the chef and the guest creates a unique opportunity to see the craft of sushi up close, as dishes are prepared and consumed in immediate succession.
The experience will be led by Chef Tatsuya Sekiguchi, who spent 10 years at acclaimed restaurant Sushi Yasuda. Diners will be treated to a custom 18-course menu influenced by the chef’s interactions with each and every guest, thus creating a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Omakase Room will source fish from Japan and the U.S. coasts and feature a menu that may include over 25 varieties of fish as it changes daily to incorporate the freshest, highest-quality ingredients available.
Influenced by the simplicity of traditional Japanese dining, the intimate 500-square foot restaurant retains its features a minimalist design style with floor-to-ceiling soft bamboo surfaces. The innate spirit of Omakase Room emerges from the atmosphere of a classic Japanese home, inspired by century-old Fukuyama, Tatsu’s family restaurant in Hasuda City, Japan. The Omakase Room’s 18-course dining experience is priced starting at $120 (exclusive of tax and tip). Guests are also welcomed to order a la carte either in place of, or in addition to the omakase menu, with items averaging $6-7 per piece. Seating is available Monday through Saturday at 6:00PM, 7:30PM, and 9:00PM; reservations are required.
