Let me preface this by saying, I haven't had a milkshake in more than 20 years, but to my surprise I was drawn in to "The Original" New York Milkshake Company on St Marks Place. I wanted to see if they could make a shake like I remember, or if it was just another fast-food scheme. To my surprise, not only was it good, but I found myself slurping it down in a matter of minutes. The secret is the thick straws. They allow easy access. I always remember as a kid trying to get the shake to go up the straw and winding up with lockjaw when it would not. This solves the problem very well. The shake itself was delicious. I went for vanilla, but there are a lot more daring flavors to be had. It was thick and frosty with little ice crystals in it. I must admit I did get a bit of mouth-freeze by drinking it so fast. At four dollars, the price is steep but well worth it. You might also want to leave a tip in the jar, because these guys are good at what they do. The New York Milkshake Company also sells ice cream in cups, waffles and ice cream, floats and malteds, grilled cheese sandwiches and even a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We'll have to save that for another day!
