Playing off the success of its highly successful siblings in Philadelphia, Boston, Atlanta et al, Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse recently opened adjacent to Grand Central Station. The restaurant features vibrant Northern Italian fare with a focus on the grill; serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is run under the leadership of Chef/Restaurateur Steve DiFillippo, General Manager Doss Posey and Executive Chef Chad Brown. The space seats 130 and provides a touch of drama via the glass elevator that transports guests to the main dining room complete with a glass-walled wine room with mahogany wine racks. You are indeed dining in the basement but it doesn’t feel that way given the high ceilings and warm wood tones that spell comfort. The Chef’s Table seats ten who can enjoy a front-row look at the open- flame pizza oven in the display kitchen. There are also four private dining spaces; including one for 75 on the enclosed roof deck of the building’s 27th floor and seasonal outdoor space for 16. You can breakfast heartily on grilled prime NY Strip Steak with two eggs and fried potatoes served with spicy ketchup or something lighter like a fresh herb omelet or a dish as simple as yogurt with fresh fruit. The lunch menu features a large variety of antipasti such as roast mushrooms with a duck egg and shaved ricotta salata; a Cobb salad with buttermilk dressing; pastas, panini and pizzas including a pie adorned with prosciutto, caramelized onions, ricotta and arugula. At both lunch and dinner, homemade pastas shine. Try the risotto with cauliflower and matsutake mushrooms, (and, if you’re feeling flush, go for the white truffle supplement) or tagliatelle Bolognese with braised veal, beef and pork. Those who opt for a salad starter will enjoy tangy chicory mated with radicchio, endive, chives, Gorgonzola and apple cider vinaigrette. Signature mains include striped bass accompanied by broccoli rabe, tangerine, bagna cuda (a hot dip) and sunchoke; chicken with salsify, spinach, tomato and Sherry brodo or the rack of lamb with escarole ragú and cannellini beans. Big meat hounds can sink their teeth into the hefty 14oz Prime New York sirloin or huge Porter House veal chop. Sommelier Chris Sweet oversees Davio’s beverage selection that includes 425 wines from Italy, France and the U.S, many available by the glass. There is a seasonal cocktail menu with some clever takes like The First Press, vodka infused with the essence of Chardonnay grapes, and a drink of Calvados and rye whiskey with an infusion of “autumn pear” and nutmeg syrup. The restaurant offers something to please almost any palate including the gluten-free who can avail themselves of a special menu section. The bar area includes banquettes and serves various takes on spring rolls, burgers and other lighter fare. Not unexpectedly in this area, the crowd at both lunch and dinner includes young professionals, older execs, New Yorkers and many out-of-towners on business. Reservations are recommended although walk-ins are welcome. - Mari Gold
