With the opening of Mighty Quinn’s, New York's barbecue scene appears to be moving up in the world. Chef Hugh Magnum learned the trade from his Texas-born father and has since opened three barbecue joints in the city. Mighty Quinn’s is the Manhattan outpost of the mini-chain, with Smorgasburg locations in Williamsburg and DUMBO. The menu is simple, as well it should be. After, all, the meat here does the talking. Reviewers have already praised its perfect level of smokiness, its simplistic seasoning – just salt, pepper and paprika before hitting the smoker – and the low and slow technique: the brisket alone ($8.50) cooks between 16 and 22 hours. The whole beef rib ($23) has been praised as well, with a gigantic size (the menu dubs it the Brontosaurus rib) and a tender, juicy texture. Also on offer are pork ribs, pulled pork, chicken and sausage. Side dishes ($5.75 medium) include beans with burnt ends and sweet potatoes with brown sugar pecan topping. The minimalist menu is reflected in the décor, simple but comfortable, with bare walls, modern light fixtures and plain wooden tables. But then again, you’re not here for the décor: just the counter, with all of the meats on offer on display, and of course the ‘cue. A variety of beers – both on tap ($7) and bottled ($6) – are available, as well as house-made iced tea ($1.75) and ginger ale ($3). - Emily Monaco
