In Bay Ridge, where Middle Eastern restaurants are plentiful, it can be difficult to stand out. Adana Mayla operates a corner shop where you will find traditional Turkish dishes. It's more of a kebab house than a formal dining establishment.
Salads and dips, like humus, baba ghanoush and tabuli, start the meal. There are slender grape leaves stuffed with rice, pine nuts, parsley and spices. Traditional boregi dishes are offered including one that resembles lasagna with layers of noodles and cheese with a crispy top sprinked with black and white sesame seeds. It's quite good. Another version features long rolls of filo dough stuffed with cheese and spinach that is baked until golden brown.
The menu at Adana Mayla is flooded with all sorts of kebabs. There is shawarma, marinated lamb cooked on a rotating spit and then sliced. Adana kebabs are made with ground lamb and red bell pepper that are served on individual skewers. We tried the lamb shish kebab where the meat is cubed. The sandwich was large and smothered with a tasty yogurt sauce. A chicken version is also available, along with lamb chops, whole fish and casserole dishes.
The food and service at Adana can be spotty, but if they can pull it together, they have the makings of a very nice neighborhood restaurant.
